Collection: Leonardo da Vinci, 1452 - 1519

The Original Portrait of a Man in Red Chalk (c. 1510) is a drawing currently in the collection of the Royal Library of Turin. It is widely, though not universally, accepted as a self-portrait of the Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is thought that da Vinci drew this self-portrait at about the age of 60. The portrait has been extensively reproduced and has become an iconic representation of him as a polymath or "Renaissance man". Despite this, some historians and scholars disagree as to the true identity of the sitter.

Leonardo da Vinci's painting style is known for its soft, blended colors and his use of light and dark, in creating innovative compositions. His work is often described as dramatic and expressive.

Da Vinci often used muted colors like grays, browns, greens, and blues. blending them with soft variations in tone and color to convey facial features. He would employ subtle colored glazes to create atmosphere and convey mood. He used known practices such as chiaroscuro, a style of shading that uses light and dark paints to define three-dimensional shape and sfumato, a technique that uses subtle gradations of light and dark to create soft, imperceptible transitions between colors.

He experimented with methods of representing space and three-dimensional objects on a two-dimensional surface and considered the human psyche to illustrate character.

He used linear perspective, learning the rules and practicing using the window as a device for drawing perspective and investigated anatomy to accurately represent the human body.

Some of his most famous paintings include The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and The Vitruvian Man.
